INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Holiday Monologues. I will try to make this Introduction short, so you can get to the real reason you bought this book – the monologues.
Why Holiday Monologues? Because everybody loves a holiday! (Even Scrooge got into the swing of it so if he could, so could anyone)
This collection is designed to provide great entertainment – whether you are performing for an audition, class, showcase or just for fun on entertainment night at your club or group.
Each monologue has a different point of view – some are written for male, others for female, and quite a few are gender neutral.
Why pick my work? Because it’s easy to read, easy to perform – and audiences love it. For over 35 years, it has been my delight to entertain people. To have them laugh, cry, think. I feel blessed that this is a gift that has been given to me - I am grateful for it every day – and I love to share.
I have different monologues for many different types of situations – comedy, drama, everything in between. Monologues with accents, some with lots of action, others more thoughtful. Monologues that challenge the viewer to pay attention to detail, and that, hopefully get the audience to have fun and think at the same time.
Blurbs will give you the gist of the story. There are different lengths, from a minute to ten minutes, so you can choose something that fits your time limits.

Tips on How to Pick a Great Monologue

TIPS ON HOW TO PICK A GREAT MONOLOGUE

Before you start looking, a few tips that might help in your choice of one of my (or another writer’s) monologues.

I've seen many actors do thousands of monologues - some of them mine. I've learned a few things - and I have a great deal of admiration for all actors. (A special thank you to D.J. Sullivan, who gives a fantastic acting class - her home was the location of my first reading! She also recommends her friend Michael Shurtleff's book AUDITION for all actors.)

1. Know your strengths - if you have a great memory, you can choose a longer piece that might have a greater punch for the judges/audiences. If you do a wonderful New York accent, try a piece that shows off this ability. Or, if you know the part you're auditioning for is athletic, find a monologue that has motion as well as dialogue.

2. Read a lot of different monologues with different backgrounds and different types of plays - if you find you can do a great British or Southern accent, this can expand the range of monologues you can try.

3. Try less well-known writers - the judges and audiences have heard Hamlet/Goodbye Girl/ Neil Simon/David Mamet a million times. If you find a playwright that hasn't had work done in your community,(maybe something new by Janet S. Tiger!) you have a better chance of keeping the audience interest.

4. Test out monologues on people who aren't related to you - the mailperson, strangers at a rec/senior center - so that you get visual and verbal feedback on different monologues.

5. Record your monologue- video is best, but an audio will give an idea how you sound. If you can video, post it on youtube (or get a friend/co-worker/grandchild do it) and let friends and neighbors give you feedback. And, if it's a good enough video, it can serve as a long-distance audition piece.

6. Have more than one monologue ready to go at all times! If you have one comedy, have a drama ready, too. The best have more than one of each – just in case the person who auditions before them does the monologue they were planning to do! (This can and does happen, especially with Shakespeare and the big guns– Tennessee Williams, David Mamet, Eve Ensler, so having a good quality monologue by a less famous writer – aka Janet S. Tiger- is a great strategy. There, that wasn’t too hard a sell, was it?)
